Valentine Seed Heart for Birds

Don't you love it when birds visit your garden? I do!

At our former house we had a very small garden, but lots of birds, bats and bees, but although we have a much larger garden at our new house now, there isn't a single tree in it. Lots of bushes that attract bees and other insects, but not one tree for birds to take shelter.

A couple of weeks ago I asked a landscaper to design a garden for us and when she asked me about must haves, I asked for a couple of trees: a couple of fruit trees for a small orchard, two or tree pollard willows (my favorite tree!) and a couple of trees to effectuate more privacy.

Last week the landscaper came with her design and I absolutely love it. It's green and lush, it gives a lot of privacy, it has enough places for relaxing alone and with friends, and the best: I think it has lots of possibilities for birds, insects and small animals like hedgehogs to find food and shelter.

I think we will start building the garden in springtime, so for now I hope to attract birds by feeding them. For that purpose I made this seeds heart. I could have chosen every form, but since it's almost Valentines Day, I found a heart the right choice!

What you need

Coconut oil

Bird seed

Silicon mold

What to do

Melt the coconut oil

Stir bird seed and oil together

Pour seed and oil in the mold

Let cool off in the fridge

Punch a hole in the heart for hanging

That's all it takes!

  1. Great idea using a silicone mold to make pretty bird seed treats. I used to make these with my kids when they lived at home but they never looked as pretty as these!

    1. Well, for the first attempt I used a cookie cutter, but when I tried the get the seed heart out, it broke. After some thinking I came up with the silicone mold idea, because that mold is so much easier to remove. Came out totally smooth.

    1. Just google 'mold' and 'heart' and you will find plenty! The mold I used is an old one; don't know anymore where I purchased it. Good luck!

  10. Ha ha, my kids laugh as I get ridiculously excited when the birds visit our feeders, especially the sweet little birds. And if we get a robin come to see us, well, I rush to take photos which never seem to come out! I love your heart bird feeder (I actually love your wooden bird feeder too!) it's a feature at Handmade Monday later today :-)

    1. I was laughed at just minutes before I read your post, because I was sneaking through the curtains to look at a great tit, that was eating out of a window feeder that I just hung on the window yesterday. Very glad to hear I'm not the only one to feel happy when little birds visit the garden, haha!
Thank you very much for the feature!
