Cake for Birds

Last year I made a seed heart for the birds in my garden for Valentine's Day, but this year I went even further: I made a cake.

The cake is made of coconut oil and bird seeds and is decorated with fruit and nuts. And it's so easy to make! Just melt the oil in a pan and add the seeds. Stir until evenly divided. Fill a cake silicone molt with the oil and seed mix and let cool off. To make the oil solidify again, put the molt in the fridge. After the oil has turned white again, you can take the molt of the fridge and start to decorate. I used pine cones, alder branches, peanuts and seeds.

  11. This looks almost good enough for human consumption. Could you use a bundt cake pan as a mold?

    1. If it is a silicone molt you can use it. When the coconut oil is cooled off and hard again a silicone molt is easier to 'peel off' the cake. I think to get the cake out of a pan you have to warm up the pan a little so the oil will melt a bit.

  12. I love this idea of a suet cake! I'm definitely going to make one for our feathered friends. We live in an older neighbourhood with lots of mature trees so the birds are plentiful. Thanks for the great idea.
