Black Cat Brooch

For two weeks now I’m working on a crochet top of an old vintage pattern and I’m still not much further than the front. Takes a lot more time than I thought! But I love the result, so I think I’m gonna finish this one, no matter how long it takes. To break the mint color of the top a little bit, I hope to win a beautiful black dragonfly brooch in a giveaway by ChronicallyVintage, but in case I don’t win anything (bigger chance J) I made a brooch myself in advance:


Shaped after my grumpy but nonetheless endlessly beloved black cat Sjakie, who isn’t among the living anymore for a while now, but still isn’t forgotten. You can see the mint colored top in the background. A picture of the total top follows after it's finished.

    Hi,
    I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. I had to put my black cat (Smudge) to sleep almost two years ago and I still miss him.
    I love the black cat pin you made for your mint green sweater. Will you be posting a how-to for him?

      Thanks for your sweet comment, Cathy! Sorry to hear about Smudge, too.
      Good idea to post a how-to, though it's not very difficult to make. Just a circle of polymer clay for the body, than the face with two ears, four little balls for the snout and two little rolls for the paws. The whiskers and eyes are painted. That's it!

      Hi Liz,
      Thanks for the simple tutorial. You're talking to someone who is not very with-it for things like this. So circle for the body; circle for the face; cut out 2 ears; two little rolls for the paws; now the 4 balls for the snout - I can see the two balls for the cheeks and a smaller one for the nose but where does the other one go?

      Hi Cathy,

      The four balls for the snout: two for cheeks, one for nose, one for chin (this one sits under the two 'cheek balls'). The balls for nose and chin are somewhat smaller than the cheek balls.

    Your brooch is wonderfully cute! It reminds me of a somewhat similar one that my mom had in the 80s/90s and used to wear on Halloween.

Christmas Scrunchies (free pattern)

 Of all the things I made this year, Crocheted Scrunchie s were the biggest hit. My daughter wears them all the time, in her hair and/or on her arm, so I thought Christmas Scrunchies would be nice, too.  I'm happy to say my duaghter thinks this Christmas variety 'is just as great as the regular, no mom, even better'!  My daughter is thirteen now, so I'm wondering if it will last very much longer, that enthusiasm over mom made things, but I hope it does, because I really enjoy making things for my daughters.   How I made them: Round 1: 40 dc around a regular hair elastic, close with a slip stitch in the first sc (40) Change color Round 2: chain 2 (counts as the first dc), 2 dc in the same stitch, 3 dc in every sc of the previous round, close with a slip stitch in the chain stitch (120) Change color Round 3: chain 2 (counts as the first dc), 1 dc in the same stitch, 2 dc in every dc of the previous round,close with a slip stitch in the chain stitch (240) Change c

Fisherman's Lamp

This year we stayed in our own country to celebrate vacation once again, due to covid. We booked a couple of vacation houses in different places and went from one to another each week.  After two weeks in a vacation I always long to go home, because of all the ideas I come along while visiting other places. Sounds familiar, or is this just me? This year I saw fisherman's lamps at various places and after the first time I already knew I wanted to make one.  We came back a couple of days ago and I couldn't wait to start. Lots of laundry had to be done, but between loading my washing machine and folding wash after drying, I started with my lamp. Today I finished it! Very happy with the result! For now it will stay on the porch, because it gives it a summery vibe and it still is summer, isn't it? But in a couple of weeks I will start to decorate the porch for fall and then I will move the lamp to our bedroom. The bedroom is totally white, it will fit in perfectly. Pattern: mad
