Haasje has a Hat!

A friend of mine has send me a Christmas Card of her family together with the dog. The dog is wearing a christmas hat. For fun I told her I would send her a card back, with me and our Flemish Giant (a large, very large rabbit). The rabbit's name is Haasje, which means Little Hare, a name my youngest daughter has given him. This is him.

So I started to crochet, not really sure what would come out of it, because Haasje has some really big ears, that definitely wouldn't fit in the hat. I had to make up something that would by-pass his ears. I first made the woolly edge, large enough to fit around both his ears, and than the actual hat. I only attached a small part of the hat's edge and filled the hat with fiber fill, so at both sides of the hat sits a large hole for Haasje's ears. Fits perfectly. And look how handsome he looks, my big friend!

Haas didn't mind at all to wear a hat. He stretched his hind legs and was laying with half closed eyes, licking my hand. Didn't even shake his head to loose the hat. Rabbits are prey animals and are always alert, unless they are totally at ease. And when they are at ease they stretch their legs and close their eyes.

So lovely to read that he is so at ease by your side.
Only a real animal friend gets this kind of love from an animal.
    Have a nice day,

  6. Adorable...love your bunny. I found hand knit sweaters with matching hats on etsy this year for our yorkie. The hats have ear holes and tie under the chin, with big pom poms on top, so cute.

    1. Thanks for your nice comment! I didn't use a pattern for it, because I made it up while making it. First I crocheted a chain that fit around Haasjes head and ears with fluffy wool and closed the ring with a slip stitch. I crocheted single crochets in the round for five rows and fastened off.
The hat I made separately with red and white cotton. I started with a magic circle, crocheted 3 sc in it and from then on crocheted in the round and increased every now and then to give the hat the shape of a cone. I can't remember exactly how I did the increasing, it's a while ago that I made the hat.
When the hat was finished I only attached about five centimeters on both sides of the hat to the woolly edge. By doing so you leave holes for the ears.
From the name of your blog I think I can make up you crochet a lot, so it shouldn't be very difficult for you to make this :-) .
Will you send me a pic of your Flem with the hat when it's finished?
