Lack of Yarn

Last week I bought the most beautiful grey, turquoise and green yarn, to knit a little sweater for my three year old. I thought the colors would look great on her, with her little grey eyes and white hair. There were only two knots left in the store, but the label on the yarn said four knots should be enough for a size 16 sweater, so I thought two of it would be more than enough for a little sweater for a three year old.

Happily I started knitting, but, you guessed it, I ran out of yarn long before the end came to sight. I went back to the yarn store, hoping they could order a knot of the same paint-bath in another branch, but no. Alas.

So, still thinking what to do about this… Good ideas, anyone?

I'm thinking about contrasting rib.

  2. Do you still have the label on the yarn? If you do, you could call the company directly to see if they could send you more.

    1. I've decided to use contrasting yarn for the ribs. The company is in Spain (and I am in the Netherlands), so it will probable take quite a while before the yarn have reached me. Thanks for sharing your idea anyway! Hugs, Liz

    1. Thanks, Traci! I really love the yarn, too! That's why I definitely want to use it. Would be too bad to put it aside because I don't have enough of the yarn. I've decided to knit contrasting ribs, so I can finish the sweater. Liz

  4. Yeah, the best you can do is choose a coordinating color and go for it!

  5. If you know what the yarn is you should be able to find it online. If it is not the same dye lot you can gradually integrate the new yarn, knitting every other line with the new skein for an inch or so - should blend in any color changes a bit more than just starting with the new skein. Hope this helps! Good luck!

    1. Thanks for sharing this idea, Alyssa! I decided to make contrasting ribs. I had some grey wool left from the Baby Boy Blanket (see earlier post) and used that. I didn't have the patience to wait for new yarn :-) . Liz

  6. For a 3-year-old, you can get away with a wildly contrasting colour started anywhere on the sweater ;-) That is gorgeous yarn!

    1. Thanks for this idea, Beth! I don't want to wait so long for more yarn (not the patient kind, I guess), so I'm going for contrast. Liz

  9. It looks like you picked a pattern that uses garter stitch (or is that just the wrong side). Garter eats up more yarn than stockinette, so that could be your problem. Although, I think if I were you I'd do a contrasting rib before I ripped out all my work to start with a different pattern.

    1. It's the back side of the stockinette stitch. I decided to go for contrasting ribs and the sweater is almost finished now. Show you the result real soon! Thanks for leaving a comment! Liz

  10. When this happens to me I simply get
another color yard and give it a
    stripe throughout... pretty colors.

  11. I think a contrasting color could be really fun...colorblocking is very fashionable right now...play with it! I'd try to pick up on that pretty turquoise!

  12. If you ever need a particular yarn go to ravelry.com. You can search for that particular yarn and also use the forums to let people know what you need. Some of the knitters have hundreds of skeins of yarn in boxes and I am pretty sure you can find what you need.

  13. You could make a scarf or a hat with it instead. Good luck finding your next project! Thanks for linking up to Hookin on Hump Day!

  14. Oh no, that is so frustrating. Where are you in the process? You could do some part of the sweater in a complementary color.

Concerning the lack of yarn, maybe it would suffice for a little tank top? So you wouldn't need yarn for the arms or much length.
