School Holidays

Image
My daughters had another school vacation (we live in The Netherlands and they have at least six holidays a year, each lasting a week at a minimum), so I had to think about activities again. Since we have an annual season ticket for the zoo, we go there at least once every holiday.  For the first time ever I saw the wolves howl! Here are some zoo pictures.   Usually we go to the theater or the movies also during school holidays. We went to House of Magic this time. It's with a cat and just because of that highly recommended. Other things we did were the playground and the fair (which, totally accidentally of course, takes place during the children's holidays). And we baked cookies! My daughters made these: And I baked Strawberry Cookies:     www.betweennapsontheporch.net For this I used a American Cookies recipe and replaced the chocolate for strawberries.

Dia de los Muertos

Image
Even more than Halloween decorations I like the sugar skulls of Dia de los Muertos! Dia de los Muertos comes right after Halloween, 1st and 2nd of November.  On my favorite all-things-paper blog, The Paper Matrix , they featured a very beautiful sugar skull. The original design is a sort of ornament, but after cutting the different layers of papers I sticked them all together to make it 2-dimensional instead of 3. This is the result. Love it! www.betweennapsontheporch.net ~*~ Last week I asked for recommendations on horror movies. Here's my list for you: The Conjuring Grave Encounters The Exorcism of Emily Rose World War Z The Woman in Black The Descent Drag Me to Hell The Dead And still: if you know some good Horror Movies, please tell me!

The Twirl Factor

Image
Month after month I was addicted to crochet, but this week I rediscovered sewing. The craving for sewing comes when I find a beautiful fabric that I must have or when I see a really nice pattern. This week I saw both, so I started sewing two different dresses. The first one I show you now, the second one is minutes from being finished and will be shown later this week. I used about 3x1½ meters of fabrics for this double dress (will be worn by a two year old), which has a major twirl factor. I love the combination of colors of this fabric: pink, fuchsia, red, orange, lime, aqua and black. And for the readers who follow this blog because of the crochet projects: I’m still not bored with crochet, there’s even a project on the way that involves both crochet and sewing, so don’t drop out yet J . ~*~ I saw two movies this weekend that I can recommend, though both are not entirely new (in fact they are rather old; 2007 and 2008). Jolene – to be true, as a Doll...

Crochet Decorations

Image
While working on the granny blanket I started to get bored to do the same granny over and over again, so to do something different for a couple of days I made these decorations for my daughters. This flower I found at a blog called Attic 24 . It’s called a Happy Flower and comes with a tutorial ! This cuckoo clock I found at a blog called LutjeHaakt . This one is without a tutorial.  Both such nice ideas, don’t you think?  Linked up to (apart from the usually parties I link up to): Petite Hermine (Sunday Linky Party) Sisters of the Wild West (Sister Sunday Link Party) Flamingo Toes (Think Pink Sunday) It's Overflowing (Overflowing with Creativity) Ask Anna (Weekend Warriors) So Creative (Party Time) delicateCONSTRUCTION (Delicately Constructed Friday) ~*~ Yesterday I watched the most fascinating movie: The Hunter -  it’s not so much the story that’s fascinating, but the subject the movie is about. Ever heard of t...

Liquorice Allsorts

Image
This weekend I made a start with the grannies for a little blanket. It's for a friend of mine who’s expecting a baby boy. The inspiration for the colours I use for the blanket I found in a bag of English liquorice allsorts. Look here for the finished project... ~*~ And I saw another movie this weekend that I have to recommend, though it’s a real old one (that I have seen about a dozen times and maybe you have too, but it has to be mentioned): Psycho – still so very scary, even though this movie is more than fifty years old! Maybe it’s because the movie is inspired by a true story (the gruesome story of Ed Gein) what makes it so frightening. And I LOVE the dresses that Janet Leigh is wearing in the movie!

Deer Skirt

Image
This Saturday my little niece has her birthday. I made this skirt for her. Hopefully she (but especially her mother, because she’s the one who has to put it on) likes little deers! Actually it's two skirts: a black one with an application of a deer and a red underskirt with ruffles.  Linked up to: Somewhat Simple (Strut Your Stuff) The Shabby Creek Cottage (Transformation Thursday ) ~*~ As you may know by now I love watching movies. Last week I saw Thelma and Louise again and it’s still my favorite in the ‘road movie’ genre. Made me think of what is my Top 5 of favorite road movies. 1.       Thelma & Louise – about two women who find freedom in traveling around the country and don’t want to give it up, for nothing and no one 2.       The Straight Story – about a man who wants to visit his dying brother; he doesn’t have a car, so he takes his lawnmower 3. The World’s Fastest Indian...

Sort of Grannies

Image
Yesterday I made a start with some granny squares. The idea I found here, at a blog called Dutch Sisters . They look a bit different from the usual granny squares, but that’s just what I like about them. I don’t know yet what I will make of it. I would like a little blanket, but I know myself well enough: it will probably take to long, I’ll be bored after a while doing the same square over and over,  and then I give up. So maybe a pillow cover is a better idea . Note by author: the finished project you can find here ! ~*~ Then again a movie proposal in the horror genre: The awakening – Also about a ghost in a house, just like my last recommendation (although this time it all takes place in a school). Very ominous. ~*~ By the way: don’t you love the colour of this tulips? Orange with a sort of flames all over it. Love it!

Flower Power Waistcoat

Image
The last three weeks I worked on this waistcoat kind of garment. The inspiration for it I found   here , at a blog called Grietjekarwietje . You can find plenty of nice and beautiful crochet projects (some with tutorial) on that blog. Back Front Such a clever pattern, don’t you think? It’s just one circle with holes for the arms. Tiger is getting on age and before he isn’t with us anymore, she wants to have a drawing of him. Nice...
