Coffee Cake

This week we celebrated my daughter's Birthday for friends and family and she asked me explicitly to make a Coffee Cake for her party and of course I did.

I baked a vanilla cake and cut it in three layers.

For the filling I mixed mascarpone and whipped cream in a 2:1 rate and added one table spoon espresso powder and two table spoons powder sugar.

The filling was smeared between the layers of the cake, on top of it and on the sides.

I spread sprinkels on the side and embellished the top of the cake with chocolate balls and coffee beans, et voila!

Fortunately for my daughter, the cake was a great success.

  1. Your cake looks delicious. I was also intrigued by the "coffee cake" title as it's something that caused me great confusion when I moved from the UK to USA. In England, coffee cake is like yours: a cake that tastes of coffee. Here in the US (at least, in California), coffee cake seems to a generic cake with a crumbly topping which is intended (??) to be eaten at breakfast time with a cup of coffee. I always enjoy going home to Britain and knowing that if I order coffee cake, it will have an actual coffee taste!

    1. Thank you, Pauline! I live in The Netherlands and people are not used to eat cake here for breakfast either. There are coffee rolls, that look like cinnamon rolls, but without the cinnamon. The rolls are filled with raisins and covered with icing and normally served around coffee time, about ten o'clock in the morning. The coffee cake I made is named Mocca Cake in The Netherlands. It wasn't really my intention to make a mocca cake, but the taste turned out to be the same.
